Adam Muscat is a Jewish, London-based multidisciplinary artist, who studied BA Architecture at Central Saint Martins. He has since gone on to work for Italian fashion house Fendi as their in-house filmmaker and photographer in Rome, and has collaborated with fashion brands including Dior, Montblanc, and Zara. Adam’s art practice comprises experimental film, sound, drawing, and installation. He has had his work featured in international film festivals in Paris, New York, LA, and London. He also showcased his debut installation at the Copeland Gallery in February 2022 as part of the group show ‘The Will To Form’. Adam graduated from the MA Fine Art Course at Central Saint Martins in July 2022.
Muscat’s process consists of layering and erasing mud, charcoal, and oil paint to create evocative compositions. Through a superposition of material and mediums, he challenges the validity of memory, with each element a recollection of the past that is erased or layered, positing memory as a fluid phenomenon. Moreover, his work extracts signs and symbols inherent to early Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah) and deviates from them to encompass the visual language of contemporary art praxis. The works are then configured into spatial installations, expanding on the materiality inherent to the pieces. Muscat utilises multiple artistic production languages, transcending the work from something familiar to something idiosyncratic that requires a sensory experience to be comprehended.
