Aisha Hanan Buhari (b. 1998) is a Nigerian artist specialising in fine art photography and video art.

Her passion for photography began in childhood, inspired by her father’s love of photography during his time as a young soldier in the Nigerian army. This early influence continues to drive her as she creates compelling photography series and video art pieces.

Hanan has a background in media, fine art, and photography. Her aesthetic is strongly influenced by the Surrealist movement, which emphasises the unconscious mind and the blending of reality with imagination. She enjoys working with mixed media, with a particular focus on video art and portraiture. Her love for cultural preservation and surrealism is evident in her project Mi Faddi, where she uses real nautilus shells to obscure the faces of her siblings, symbolising their preciousness.

Alongside her personal creative projects, Hanan Buhari produces work for her NGO, which provides art therapy and psychological support to survivors of sexual violence in Nigeria. The works created for the foundation are auctioned, with the proceeds donated to support its mission further.

DADA

My work explores themes of freedom, secrecy, identity, pride, and the often-overlooked beauty of my culture. My Fulani heritage, one of the many tribes in Nigeria, profoundly influences my art. This identity consistently emerges in my photographs, which can at times appear mysterious or cryptic, reflecting layers of emotion and unique life experiences.

In Nigeria, it remains uncommon—and often frowned upon—for a young woman to pursue art as a full-time career. However, by openly embracing this path, I have inspired others to do the same. A central aim of my work is to serve as a source of inspiration, particularly for young Nigerian women. I hope my art encourages them to confidently embrace their authentic selves and passions, regardless of societal expectations.

As part of my commitment to giving back, I also use art therapy as a healing tool for survivors of sexual violence through my NGO, the Hanan Buhari Foundation.
