ANIMARO DESIGN
Cluster Exhibitor | Cluster Crafts | 2022
Matthew Gilbert, Animaro Desgin, is an artist based in East London who is inspired by the art of motion. His background is architecture and design from which he draws much of his inspiration. His work has been exhibited in Milan, London, Copenhagen and featured in numerous magazines and online publications.
Matthew combines art and engineering to inject movement into everyday objects for the home, elevating them into something entirely new and unexpected. He seeks to elevate them by referencing a greater dimension. Each piece tells a story about the world around us; such as the location of the planets in the solar system or the impact of gravity. He believes that household objects can and should be inspiring and bring us beyond the confines of our home into the greater cosmos.
A second idea present in Matthew’s work is a desire to bring back the visual generosity of mechanical objects. Electronic circuit boards have largely phased out mechanical devices throughout the 20th century. Technology has gone from being something reparable with a bit of know-how (cars for example) to being an invisible and private technology, so small and advanced that it is no longer in the hands of the common man or woman. Mechanical objects have the power to visually explain to a passer-by how they work, a steam engine, a grandfather clock.
