Carolina Baños Cervantes was born and raised in Mexico City. She received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2021, where she discovered her interest in the convergence of art and design disciplines and material exploration from a physical and conceptual perspective. She has worked with a variety of media such as ceramic, glass, metal, textiles and photography. While her practice started with painting and drawing, she now works mostly with sculptural forms. Her work has been exhibited at the BFA Thesis Exhibition at SAIC Galleries and the WantedDesign Online International Schools Show.

Carolina currently works as the Temporary Exhibitions Designer at Museo Memoria y Tolerancia in Mexico City, where she has designed 7 exhibitions to this day. Simultaneously, she keeps developing her personal studio practice, mainly creating ceramic pieces that explore how objects interact with space and their surroundings, whether it be in relation to light, other objects or people.

WOVEN VASE

My work comes from a place of curiosity and problem-solving. Each piece is an interesting challenge, and it fascinates me how the initial concept I have for a piece evolves as the production process develops and the material has a say on what the object ends up becoming. Because of this, I am more interested in the process of making than the actual finished product. Even though I sometimes think of the final product as documentation of my making process, the pieces are never static. As the object is formed, it begins to hold movement and thoughts, and when the object is finished it becomes active as it interacts with light, other objects, people, and the physical and contextual space it is placed in. My interest in the interaction of my work and its environment has guided my practice towards three-dimensional materials, mostly favoring form rather than pictorial depictions. Material exploration is prominent in my practice, as I enjoy working across a variety of media, sometimes merging multiple materials together. It is incredibly captivating for me to explore the boundaries of each material while also using them to express my formal and conceptual interests.
