SEND NUDES | 2022

Chiara Bruni is an Italian photographer and author born in Frosinone in 1987. She began her studies in Humanities at La Sapienza University of Rome, graduating in Contemporary Theater
in 2015. She attended courses in Stage Photography, Darkroom, and Analog Printing at Officine Fotografiche (Rome) between 2016 and 2017, but most of her training comes from her curiosity to explore the
photographic medium independently and freely.

Her imagination is involved with a past reality; she feels a close connection to melancholy. She has the instinct to overlay, comment on, and manipulate what others have experienced before her. She investigates the theme of identity in an intimate sphere, relating the body to the surrounding space and creating alternative realities.
She is oriented towards a surreal and dreamlike dimension. Her research includes various creation processes that range from digital and analogue collage to hand-stitching interventions with needle and thread on images created by her or belonging to archives.

A VOLTE

A VOLTE TI VOGLIO E BASTA I

I found in a flea market a stock of postcards of female nudes from the early 20th century. For a long time I observed the posed women, their genuineness and spontaneity in front of the camera noticing a completely different approach from the nude we are used to seeing today, especially on social media. So I decided to intervene and alter the images, creating ‘analogue memes’ to talk about contemporary feminisms.

The collection is called Send Nudes, a topic expression of the sexual practice of sexting. I played on the verb ‘to send’ which in those days was still done in an adorably manual way, via physical mail.

SEND NUDES (MOUNTAIN GIRL) | 2022

The intention of Send Nudes is to (re)assign the woman’s body a new centrality, destroying the image of the woman-object as an invention of the male gaze. Thanks to the technique of embroidery on paper, an intervention that is both violent - piercing, tearing - and delicate - welding, patching, sewing - Chiara has the power to create new scenarios. Details, images and inscriptions thus change their meaning and purpose: from objects for the gratification of male desire, to feminist subjects, which play on the theme of femininity and sensuality oriented towards body positivity, also with irony and sarcasm
