CHRISTINE MOOIJER
Cluster Photography & Print Exhibitor | 2025
Christine Mooijer (b.1990) is a photographer based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, mainly focused on (staged) portrait photography. As a child she was drawn to all things Hollywood and pop culture, especially the stories built around female leads. Her images are centered around the disproportionate representation of women in most media throughout the years.
Following her interest in popular culture, she studied graphic design and got a BA in photography in Amsterdam in 2018. Her cinematically staged stories are heavily influenced by the movies she grew up watching and the music she listened to. The disillusionment of the divide between real life and fiction formed the basis of the darker atmosphere seen in her work.
Christine’s work explores the tension between her personal experiences and the ideals often glorified by pop culture, particularly as they pertain to women. Influenced from a young age by the idealized vision of the American Dream, she often found her dreams clashing with the realities of life. Her photography explores the contrasts between these fictional dream worlds and the imperfections of reality.
Her cinematic portraits delve into themes of loneliness, introspection, and the complex emotions tied to unfulfilled aspirations, i.e. anxiety and depression. Her images often highlight moments of quiet reflection, where her subjects (primarily women) grapple with the disconnect between the dream and reality. These works not only explore the darker sides of these experiences, but also seek out the silver lining— the personal growth and understanding that emerges from confronting these struggles.
Her work aims to blend Hollywood fantasies with the grounded, pragmatic sensibilities of her Dutch roots. Christine’s stories are a response to the historical underrepresentation of the female experience, offering a different perspective on their expectations and the pressures they experience. She strives to present a more authentic portrayal of their realities, blending fantasy with a sincere exploration of their inner worlds.
