Striding Arches | Portrait

David JP Hooker has been a potter, sculptor, and educator for three decades. While he creates work in a variety of media, pottery has always been at the center of his art practice. His work seeks the inherent beauty of ordinary materials, interacts with daily rhythms, and invites contemplation in a world increasingly full of distractions.

These sculptures are a kind of gestural abstraction in space. The structures grow organically, following a logic that lies somewhere between rhizomes and architecture. The first connections are made seemingly at random, but as the piece grows the form begins to dictate the placement of each additional element. As a maker I find that fascinating. The process of creating the piece is contemplative, and as a result I find the pieces to suggest both the strength and quietness of something sacred.
