EMILIE POIRET-BROWN

Cluster Exhibitor | Photography & Print Fair 2022

Emilie Poiret-Brown is a photographic artist based in Southern England. She has been drawn to the inherently unpredictable nature of cameraless photography. Emilie’s work is akin to painting in that she interacts directly with the photographic surface without the intervention of a lens.

The Body

Unlike conventional photography where the photographer’s body is distanced, Emilie’s body is active in the mark-making, interacting physically with the photographic materials. She treats the light-sensitive surface as a canvas, using her body as a paintbrush. For some pieces this involves direct contact, for others she uses extensions to her body.

Her work does not capture an instant in time, but is a reflection of the process of creation.

A journey with materials

Separate from her work with the body, Emilie has embarked on a series which focuses on the chemical reaction. This is a journey of experimentation in which the materials are not merely passive elements serving the artist. Instead, their unpredictable nature is an integral part of the work.
