ESTHER ORTIZ-VILLAJOS
Cluster Contemporary Jewellery Exhibitor | 2021, 2022 & 2024
Esther Ortiz-Villajos is a Spanish jewellery artist and architect based in Madrid. Combining craftsmanship and technology, jewelry is the artistic medium most capable of conveying her plastic interests. She works freely, exploring the possibilities of each material and precisely controlling the processes, while enjoying materialising each of the concepts in which she deepens.
ISOMETRIES
Collection
The collection explores the plastic flexibility of geometry through various strategies. On the one hand, isometric manipulation (sliding, flipping, and rotating) makes a static and incontestable figure such as the square dynamic without losing its essential geometric qualities. On the other hand, the overlapped layers of mesh of different densities make them vibrate together. And finally, the use of colour frames the planes, gives depth, and stimulates perception depending on how the light falls, making the visual weight shift from opacity to lightness.
Cheerful and colourful pieces emphasise lightness and interstitial spaces, blur perception, and transform geometry with dynamic tension. "In visual perception, a color is almost never seen as it really is, as it physically is. This fact makes colour the most relative medium in art." - Josef Albers, 1963.
