In Giles’s first year out of university, he has continued to evolve his final piece ‘Furo’, This sculpture recently won him the Belmond New Designers Award and a piece is headed to the French riviera to be placed on one of their barges next year. ‘Furo’ has also been selected for the British Glass Biennale 2022 awards which will be held in August.

'Furo' relates to taking a mindful breath. The piece uses deflation and inflation to force restrictions within the glass to make the most natural reaction possible, with an aim to emanate flow and stillness.

I base my designs on natural inspiration, with a mindful approach to how my designs could positively impact the viewer/user. Focusing on the sculptural aspect of glass has allowed me to add greater elements of play in my designs. My thinking relates to a more simplistic attitude towards design and where our ideas come from.
It always amazes me how nature can surprise you, whether this be like comparing tree roots and the insides of a lung, or how the fractals of bacteria are like that of an eye.
It intrigues me how infrequently we use these designs and patterns found in nature in our own creations. I’d like to push a more organic way of design thinking as I believe it would benefit the users: a bird does not make a square nest.
Though my focus in on the sculptural aspect of design, my background is that of product design. This leads me along other varied pathways of work, some of which are far more practical than my current work. I use these side projects to help influence me as I find having a broader perspective of design opens new ways of looking at things.
