IMPRESSION | 2023

Over the years, past collections have explored a vast array of landscapes from the golden boulders of Hampi, India, to the lowest point on earth above sea level - the Danakil Depression in Northern Ethiopia. In his most recent work Hari used topographical maps, sensations and feelings closer to home, here in the British Isles to make sculptural furniture and artwork. Most notably here at Cluster - Impression, State of Mind, Portal and Dart.

Hari Gordon is an Artist and Furniture maker living in Cornwall. Graduating from the University of Brighton in 2020 with a degree in 3D Design and Craft, Hari's practice continues to centre around exploring roundness and texture through wood. Drawing his creative ideas from his love for adventure through surfing, climbing and hiking, Hari's work draws the audience in to touch, interact and play with each piece. Much in the same way we explore on the rocks, sea and soil when outdoors.

When making a new Sculpture the process can begin weeks, months, sometimes years before I begin in the workshop. Each year I make sure to carve out time to be in the elements, to switch off and tune in. To me there is no greater inspiration than exploring a new landscape, taking everything in.

When in the workshop, I often find I can get into a flow state quite quickly. A few things I attribute to helping this state emerge include a practical space without many distractions, choosing to use primarily hand tools to allow for a slow, meditative pace, and a good playlist.

I make most of my process decisions intuitively, as I am working. Using wood I think there is a gift in the materials ability to show you how it wants to be worked with. Whether that’s to highlight a certain feature of the grain that comes through as I carve, or the size and length of the piece of wood I am using, I feel it works best when I am in a dialogue with the material about what wants to come through.
