JAMES HENSBY
Cluster Photography & Print Exhibitor | 2025
Born with a restless spirit and a passion for exploration, James Hensby has always been captivated by the power of photography to document moments and evoke emotions. Drawing inspiration from the timeless tale of Saint Christopher, who carried travelers across treacherous terrains, James’ creative journey merges the art of analogue photography with the transformative power of travel.
Embracing the concept of “Play” – Positive Uncertainty, James approaches his practice with a spirit of exploration and spontaneity. He welcomes the unpredictability of the creative process, using experimentation to discover new perspectives and push boundaries. This openness allows him to unearth hidden treasures within both the moments he captures and the final artworks he creates.
He views photography as more than just capturing images; it is about conveying the stories and emotions of the subjects and places he encounters. His work features captivating images that evoke a sense of timelessness and contemplation. Whether through the interplay of light and shadow, the subtle nuances of a subject’s expression, or the fleeting beauty of a moment, James aims to transport viewers into a space where time slows, revealing the essence of existence within a single frame.
James’ practice spans both two-dimensional and photo-sculptural forms. His two-dimensional works include traditional and digital prints, while his photo-sculptural pieces blend photography with three-dimensional elements. This combination creates a dynamic interplay between visual and tactile experiences, offering a rich and multi-layered artistic expression.
Building on the theme of motion, James explores the concept of moving out of darkness, visually portraying the emotional and psychological distance traveled from past experiences. Referencing the Redshift phenomenon and using it to symbolize progression, healing and a journey away from trauma. His photographs serve as a testament to the beauty of resilience discovered in moments of profound transformation.
