Copper Variation | Shards | 2022

The Shard is a project consisting of large still-life ceramic sculpturesmade in artist residence ‘Sundaymorning@EKWC’ in the Netherlands. A shard is a fragment of ceramics, metal, glass and rock, and also a broken structure that is used to construct inside and outside. After the destruction by an external force, each fragment reveals hidden components of the body like the circulatory system or structure frame.

Metal glazed wire| 2022

I explored the components composed of buildings such as pipe, bricks, and metal beams beyond the demolished structure, and I reassembled them into an unfamiliar composition or imitated by fragile ceramics. As fragile ceramics are combined with industrial materials, they emphasise their fragility and flexibility even their durability. I expanded this practice through my Korean background, representing Asians by experimenting with traditional Asian glazes such as celadon and copper-red on the shards amongst my interest of cultural diversity and the originality, also the beauty of each pottery shard as an object containing a memory.
