Kaja Stumpf (b. 1987, Norway) is a painter living in London.

She pursued her BA in Fashion and worked as a womenswear designer before returning to painting for her MA. In her work, she explores ideas around memory and perception, using colour and fragmented layers to question their origin and validity, creating a sense of delayed familiarity.

My recent work examines memory, self-representation, and body as landscape. I’m interested in the non-verbal coping mechanisms we apply in an attempt to deal with emotional needs and why we use our bodies as currency to communicate in a visual language to the outside world what we value and how we feel on the inside. I come from a background in fashion, which impacts my understanding of the body in relation to the self and fuels my need to dig deeper into the ideas behind the exterior.

KAJA LØNNKVIST STUMPF I Portrait

Through painting, I revisit past experiences, in an attempt to understand what shapes self-image and behaviour. Utilising staged images and the photographic family archive, I alter the colours to create a sense of delayed familiarity, and by applying a digitally inverted filter, a parallel scene is revealed.
