KATHRYN AUBREY
Cluster Exhibitor | Cluster Crafts | 2022
Kathryn Aubrey is an American Expat currently working and living in Munich, Germany. Her explorations in glass attempt to convey a sense of transition and discovery, while focusing on cultural identities. She challenges the viewer to examine fixed perceptions that relate to the dynamics of identity and culture. As with travel, some of her most fortunate glass discoveries have been made by accident, by straying off the beaten path. Her body of work is a reflection of these choices. Enjoy the journey!
Kathryn Aubrey has travelled to the U.S., UK, Germany, Switzerland and Austria to take classes and currently teaches and creates out of her own studio in Munich, Germany. She has been awarded residencies in both Northlands, Caithness Scotland and Pilchuck, Washington, USA. Kathryn has exhibited in the Warm Glass Prize, 2020 and Scottish Glass Society, 2012. Her work is held in both public and private collections including the Allied Museum in Berlin, Germany. Kathryn is a member of American Craft Council.
The full title of this series is: “Bound to Fail: discrimination, racism, misogyny, prejudice, privilege and cultural appropriation. Are we all cut from the same cloth? #America2020”. Each element in the “Bound to Fail” series started out in the exact same shape and size which was then replicated in three different colors of glass. These identical shapes were then subjected to various pressures in the kiln through a process of multiple firings using molds which I constructed specifically for this project.
