MAÏTÉ SCHMIT

Cluster Contemporary Jewellery Exhibitor | December 2024

Maïté Schmit was born in Colombia and grew up in Luxembourg, where she still lives. It is here that she developed her passion for jewellery. She began her journey as a professional jeweller, studying traditional jewellery techniques and exploring the specific differences in jewellery across the countries she lived in, including Belgium, Germany, Italy, and France. With extensive experience in the high-end watchmaking industry (Patek Philippe, Rolex, Hublot, Chanel) and in various goldsmith studios, she launched her own brand, Maïté Jewelry, in 2018. At the end of 2024, the brand name was changed to Kuntur Jewelry.

As a goldsmith, Maïté crafts jewellery that resonates deeply with her essence. Each piece is meticulously designed to embody individuality, elegance, and artistic expression. Every creation begins with a narrative, a theme that breathes life into her designs, transforming them into powerful statements and personal armors.

Her goal as a goldsmith is to create jewellery she would cherish wearing. Her creations are not mere accessories; they are extensions of the wearer's identity, each piece crafted to celebrate uniqueness. Some creations stand as singular, exclusive works of art, while others are available in limited sizes, ensuring a touch of exclusivity in every design. The collection includes rings, earrings, ear cuffs, necklaces, and body ornaments, each piece telling its own story and inviting wearers into a world of timeless elegance and profound meaning.

My journey as a person of colour, adopted, has led me down this unique path. I see myself as an artist, meticulously crafting my identity through the exploration of body, mind, and soul. Drawing inspiration from my birth country, Colombia, and its captivating pre-Colombian art, my jewellery and body ornaments reflect my personal journey. For me, body ornaments have a symbolic dimension that transcends the physical. As an adoptee, my life's journey has led me to question everything that is established, because nothing corresponds to my history or that of my ancestors. My jewellery and body adornments carry their own identity, always in search of an individuality that reflects my creative flair and unique vision, embodied in each of my pieces.

The name 'Kuntur,' meaning 'condor' in Quechua, symbolises strength, freedom, and spiritual significance. The bird is revered as a messenger between the earth and the heavens, life and death, soaring through different worlds in Andean cultures.
