MARIA HARRIS-SUTTON

Maria Elizabeth Harris-Sutton (b. 2000) is a London-Irish artist and photographer based in London, with a passion for both photography and the arts.
Her journey into documentary photography began during college, where she spent much of her time in the art and photography departments. There, Maria explored deep-rooted emotions, experimenting with alternative photographic and artistic techniques as a form of personal expression. Inspired by art therapy and artists who use their work as a diaristic tool, she developed an interest in documenting her own experiences—an approach that remains central to her practice today.
LOST IN TIME | 2024
With a background in Photography and Fine Art, alongside an interest in sociology and psychology, Maria adopts a diaristic approach, using the camera as a tool for personal exploration.
Her work is influenced by documentary photography, which seeks to provide honest representations of people and events. However, Maria subverts the traditional documentary style, reshaping it to reflect her own perspective. Her photographic style incorporates fine art practices, capturing both the turbulence and stability of lived experience. Additionally, she often integrates sound pieces to emphasise the emotional connections between herself, her subjects, and her work.
“Visual artist working within photography and prop styling.
I am a London-based photographer who uses the camera to capture the human experience. Through my practice, I explore health, relationships, and emotions rooted in youth culture. My work develops creative projects that highlight the interconnections between physical, emotional, and social health.
Daydream – a series of still images exploring the relationship between myself and my mother.”

TAROT CARDS | 2024
“My mum always daydreamed. I remember asking her for things, but she would be in another world—absent.
I was a reticent little girl. I was often in another world too, just like my mother. I was conscious; I was spiritual; it was part of my upbringing. We talked about dreams and how they connected the dots in our lives, revealing what we needed to understand. We read tarot cards, consulting the other side; spiritual artefacts filled our home.
I believe photography came to me to give me purpose. It granted me access to the spiritual realm and brought me closer to the other side.
This series of work is a daydream—a thin veil between the material and the spiritual, positioned in neither.”
