Meichen Chen (1998) was born and raised in China, currently living in London and has a ceramics studio in East London. She earned an MA in Ceramics & Glass from the Royal College of Art in London and previously completed a BA with honors in Ceramics at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts in China. Meichen has exhibited her work in various cities across China and the UK. Also, she had residencies in Jingdezhen and Finland before.

Since her early childhood, Meichen had a big interest in clay and the process of making. She liked to pile up the sand randomly in different shapes along the riverside. Also, drawing on her experiences with nature, Meichen believes that humans often underestimate the strength of nature and should not be overlooked. Meichen's approach to making is experimental. She preserves the real texture and reshapes forms, applying different glaze colours to create new living organisms.

SLOW VIOLENCE 2 | DETAIL

‘It’s what I do that teaches me what I am looking for’ - Pierre Soulages.
When I begin a new piece, I only have a vague idea of the final form it will take. I start with a few pieces of clay that I assemble, then in a letting go, I let my hands do. A shape appears, I tilt it, observe it, turn it over, pinche it, caresse it. Then it emerges, springs up like evidence. I suddenly realise that it reflects a state of mind, a state of being, an emotion. I look at it, it is there, present, filled with what I put there, a search for Beauty, Love, Transcendence.
