RALPH WHITEHEAD

Cluster Exhibitor | Photography & Print Fair 2022

Rear Window | 2018

Ralph Whitehead is an art and fashion photographer based in London. He was born and raised in Italy but moved to the UK when he was 17, his background is in physics and mathematics but photography was always a lifelong interest he is now full time dedicated to photography.

He brings over a penchant for experimentation from his science background into the darkroom. He has worked on a number of ad hoc analogue processes in service of the atmosphere he renders in his images.

Funeral March of a Marionette | 2019

His fashion editorials have a cinematic quality and explore themes of duality, inner struggle and transience and are to be thought of as short stories in their own right. His approach and atmosphere nods to surrealism whilst walking on a tightrope between suspense and stillness. Working almost exclusively on a 8x10 large format view camera, a somewhat counterintuitive medium for fashion photography, makes it so that every image is planned and constructed with committed intent.

Ralph’s work has featured in many international art and fashion magazines including AnOther, Love, Beauty Papers, Pan and the Dream and has exhibited his work most recently in contemporary analogue photography festival Revela-t in Catalunya.

In the body of work presented here Ralph brings together a collection of images from various fashion editorials shot over the last few years. In the spirit of the Hitchcock classic thriller, Rear Window is a curious observer's view on different stories, each with their own personality, but whose lives are all connected and inhabit the same space with a pervasive underlying sense of mystery and unease. Like items on the spread at the Mad Hatter’s tea party, they each leave more questions than they answer, but together they make an atmosphere that draws you in.

Ralph Whitehead’s work sits between art and fashion photography and deals in themes of duality, contradiction, internal discomfort with nods to surrealism.

All shot on an 8x10 large format view camera using a particular idiosyncratic analogue process, the images are originally hand printed as contact prints, a key step to achieve his particular aesthetic. The working prints are scanned and edited and the final works are then digitally reprinted to a larger size.
