RICHARD ALLEN
Cluster Contemporary Jewellery Exhibitor | December 2024
Richard Allen has been designing and creating jewellery for nearly 40 years, focusing on fusing recycled silver and gold using the ancient Korean technique of Keum Boo. Born and raised in East Yorkshire, Richard first began designing and modifying 1980s fashion jewellery alongside his mother.
Alongside a career in recruitment and merchandising, Richard explored various jewellery-making techniques, including gold plating and hydrographics. Several years ago, he decided to focus fully on jewellery as his primary vocation, working extensively with metal clay, particularly silver clay. His intricate designs, inspired by the delicate aesthetic of Japanese jewellery, have been exhibited in Tokyo and showcased in various galleries across the UK.
Today, Richard pushes the boundaries of recycled silver and gold jewellery, using innovative methods that depart from traditional silversmithing techniques. His work continues to evolve, combining sustainability with artistic innovation.
Richard enjoys exploring the unique possibilities of metal clay, particularly its capabilities beyond traditional silversmithing techniques. Working with recycled silver in clay form provides a more adventurous platform for creativity. Combining this with the traditional Keum Boo gold-fusing technique, applied over a naked flame, adds an element of both whimsy and excitement to his process. For Richard, it’s all about thinking outside the box.
His recent collection, Protection, is inspired by the concrete blocks placed along the British coastline during World War II as a defence against potential Nazi invasion. The collection reflects his fascination with the robust simplicity of both modern and historical architecture, alongside the intricate delicacy of Japanese jewellery design.
As a metal clay tutor, Richard is passionate about introducing this versatile material to a wider audience. He believes metal clay deserves greater recognition and exploration within the jewellery-making community, championing its potential for innovative and dynamic creations.
