RUOYI JIANG
Cluster Contemporary Jewellery Exhibitor | 2024
Ruoyi Jiang, a Chinese artist, shifted from canvas to jewellery after moving to London in 2018.
Ruoyi received a Bachelor of Art (BA (Hons) Fashion Jewellery) from the University of the Arts London and the degree of Master of Arts at The Royal College of Art (Jewellery and Metal). After graduating, she aims to use jewellery as a tool for addressing social issues. Ruoyi seeks collaborations across disciplines to create impactful projects. She thrives on exchanging ideas with professionals, aiming to bridge connections within the jewellery industry and beyond. Her journey showcases a fusion of artistic expression, social consciousness, and interdisciplinary collaboration, promising significant contributions to both the art world and society.
Stemming from the language of Chinese healing practices, Ruoyi's jewellery works selected the symbols - acupuncture points and the human body shape. The collection explores the dynamic relationship between objects and the body, using beige silicone resembling skin and metal buttons mimicking acupuncture points. The design, resembling a human skeleton, blends seamlessly into daily wear. Emphasising human body mechanics, Ruoyi incorporates pressing points, crafted using a combination of pressure elements such as magnets, buttons, and ball bearings, alongside medical materials including surgical metal and silicone, allowing for a unique interaction with the body for enhanced comfort and well-being.
Jewellery becomes an extension of the body, with pulse sensors adding vitality by responding to the wearer's heartbeat. This interactive feature encourages users to pause and connect with the object, offering a gentle reminder to engage with their surroundings. Through this creation, Ruoyi prompts reflection on our tendency to overlook the world around us, injecting a dose of excitement into our programmed lives.
