Cluster Crafts Exhibitor | Young Talent Spotlight | 2024

BEET | 2023

In 2020 she moved to London, where she completed a Master’s Degree in Design focused on ceramics at Central Saint Martins. She uses clay as a means of expression and seeks, through her sculptural objects, to provide a sense of peace and balance, freezing in time – and in clay – the concepts of belonging, connection and the fluid nature of existence .

Ruth María grew up in Monterrey, Mexico. During her time living there she had the opportunity to travel all around her native country. Her initial interest in ceramics and traditional crafts was born from these formative experiences and led her to study Industrial Design. After developing multiple ceramic collections and having worked for multiple artists, she took up an artistic residence in Arita, Japan where she learned about traditional porcelain processes.

Growing up in a heavily industrialised city focused on mass production, made me question how objects are created from a machine-man perspective. Living and working in Mexico, Japan, Australia and London has allowed me to discover what it is to be a ceramic artist in different continents and yet find how tradition remains. And in my work, I seek to embrace aspects of expressive art and purposeful design. I bring creative freedom to my work and seek to challenge orthodox notions of utility. I see weight, texture and shape as aspects to be dictated by my sense of creativity and less bound by convention.
