SARAH FJØRTOFT JACOBSEN
Cluster Exhibitor | Photography & Print Fair 2022
Sarah Fjørtoft is a Norwegian photographer based between Norway and South Africa.
She combines her education in art and photography with a deep interest for the underlying in humans and society to make thought provoking projects that explore the subconscious sides of the human mind.
The urge to create has always been there. A need to communicate on a less confronting level than with words.
When Sarah in 2017 started her studies at The Norwegian School of Photography, this gave her a medium where she could finally explore the human psyche through art. Conceptually angled projects encouraged thorough processing of facts, thoughts and feelings to give the images the depth and expression she wanted.
In 2020 she moved to Cape Town, South Africa where she started an art degree at Ruth Prowse School of art. Further expanding her knowledge of different artistic practices, but also affirming her love for photography as a medium.
Her photographic work is conceptual, often aesthetic and subtle with strange undertones. When working on a project she enjoys miksing the genres within photography, feeling the different aspects helps her create a “fuller” body of work. Her work has been published in Magasinet Fotografi, Prisløs, Altså and Der Grief Guestroom.
For as long as I can remember I have had a special interest for the underlying in humans and society. What drives us, why do we feel and act the ways we do?
I work to make aesthetic and thought provoking photographs touching on subjects lingering at the border of our consciousness. With my projects I hope to create a window for personal recognition and reflection within the audience.
My artistic projects often start with a thought or feeling I’m curious about the origins of. To understand my own drips from the subconscious I have to let myself sink into a process where reflections related to the themes I work with lead to creations which in turn lead to new reflections. Photography helps me process and at the same time the process helps me to photograph. This spiral of creation and reflection takes me on a journey where new things surface until I bottom out in what I understand as my personal truth of the original thought. My work is a communication of the conclusions I get to, but also a reflection of the internal processes that were used to get there.

Even though my photographs originate from personal felt experiences and thoughts I believe the subjects I chose to portray are relatable to most humans. That they shine light on some part of our collective truth. And that if I manage to put the door slightly ajar, maybe more people will enter.
