TOWARDS THE UNIVERSE

DEFRAGMENTATION

Sebastiano Fischer was born in Pantelleria, a small island between Sicily and Africa. He trained at the Ballardini State Art Institute for Ceramics in Faenza, specialising in majolica art. He later graduated in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. After finishing his studies, Sebastiano returned to his beloved island, where he began to experiment, developing a personal style, aimed at conveying and bringing out the beauty and energy of his surroundings.

MEETING OF TWO FRAGMENTS IN THE UNIVERSE

My ceramics are inspired by the motherhood and colours around me. The glazes and effects that distinguish my ceramics have been formulated and created by me, the result of years of research and continuous evolution. In addition to using traditional ceramic elements, I also use many locally found materials that are then mixed and married together to create countless shades and textures. I predominantly use the Raku technique, an ancient Japanese technique. Each piece is created on a potter’s wheel or freehand with various types of clays. It is fired a first time at a temperature of 1,000 degrees. The second firing, on the other hand, is done in a self-made gas kiln. Once the glaze’s melting temperature is reached, the piece is taken out of the kiln and placed in sawdust, which ignites to create effects and iridescence on the surface of the work.
