SOPHIE VAN DOOREN

 Cluster Contemporary Jewellery Exhibitor 2022

Sophie van Dooren is a contemporary designer and artist with a focus on jewellery design, goldsmith techniques and material research.

In her work she deals with themes related to nature. In doing so, she looks at how this theme relates to humanity and herself. Her inspiration and fascination lies with the pressure that we as humans place on nature and the globe. She searches for an image that fits her idea of this relation.

She is fascinated by details in structure, colour, shape and texture in nature. She became inspired by natural products such as a cactus skeleton or an insect. Based on the chosen material, she experiments with the shape, colour, pattern, thickness and more. In her projects she is guided by a specific material that ultimately helps her with searching for an image.

In her collection ‘Fragility’ she went in search of an image that might represent the concept of fragility. She started researching this theme because she felt like the world around us keeps getting more fragile and vulnerable. Different natural phenomena suddenly appeared in her environment such as floods, severe storms and of course the pandemic. All of this made her feel very fragile and vulnerable in her immediate environment. She then went looking for visible fragility and how she could translate this into her jewellery, along with how these pieces enter into a relationship with the wearer and his/her interaction with the surrounding.
