SUE GUNN
Cluster Exhibitor | Cluster Crafts | 2022
She is Intrigued by the visual similarity between the body’s internal structures and the flow systems found in the natural world and endeavours to capture the vulnerability and impermanence of both.
Her fragile sculptures are reminiscent of veins or roots, they warp and collapse when high fired, reorganising into precariously balanced forms that she hopes will elicit an emotional response and become a starting point for dialogue.
Sue Gunn is a ceramic artist working in S.W. London. She graduated from Morley College HND Ceramics, with distinction, in 2020.
She is a hand builder, working primarily in porcelain paper clay, manipulating hollow ridged tubes into tangled forms.
She develops her own crawled and volcanic glazes which she combines with satin matt finishes to create a juxtaposed contrast.
The shifting landscape of our world, whether as a result of natural phenomena or the impact of human intervention, is the inspiration for this collection.
High fired porcelain is combined with fractured and bubbled glazes which evoke images of dried and crumbled earth, lava flows and coastal erosion.
The sculptures are created by rolling ribbons of paper porcelain on a plaster former and manipulating the hollow, ridged tubes into tangled forms. The surface is then carved and smoothed, refining the profile of the finished piece.
Glazes have been developed over time, involving many tests and experiments and include natural oxides and minerals to create the surface textures.
These hybrid pieces combine the sculptural with a functional aesthetic and some can be used as holders for beeswax ritual candles and tea lights.
