THE WEIGHT OF MEMORIES I | 2024

Susana España is a Spanish photographer, visual artist, and collector. Born in Spain, she currently lives and works in Bremen, Germany.

Originally graduating in Dentistry, she later began studying Art Restoration before ultimately pursuing Photography. With a master’s degree in Fine Art Photography from the London College of Communication (London, 2007), she has participated in group exhibitions across Europe, the UK, and Turkey. Her first solo exhibition in the United States took place in 2024 at Atelier Laforest, Robert Munford Archive (Maine, USA).

Photography has allowed España to explore the notion of home—not merely as a physical space, but as a sanctuary for dreams, a shelter that protects the dreamer and allows them to dream in peace. Through the intimacy of her domestic spaces and her coexistence with her children, she reflects on how a person’s ability to return to themselves is, at the same time, a way of reclaiming the world.

In recent years, her practice has expanded to include collage, mixed media, and embroidery, working with her own archive of images and layering them with new meanings.

The Construction of a Dream (2024) reflects on the nature of dreams and their relationship with memory and sensation.

Through self-portraits and landscapes from my own photographic archive, I travel between past and present, nature and water. And in that visual journey, I wonder whether daily sleep has the power to heal wounds.

THE DREAM TURNED INTO STONE | 2024

In 1901, the philosopher and writer Henri Bergson explained in his short essay The World of Dreams that while our dreams are built around what we have seen, said, desired, or done, their formation depends on memory images gathered and preserved from earliest childhood in ‘the innermost depths of the unconscious’. Bergson described dreams as the direct link between sensation and remembrance.

A SHOULDER TO REST| JUXTAPOSED MEMORIES

My camera cannot photograph my dreams, but many of my images are inspired by the weight of my memories. The self-portraits consist of analogue photographs printed on Fabriano paper (300g), later enhanced with mixed media (watercolour and ink). I combine them with landscape photography, creating collages by scanning the film and working digitally to construct new images that seek to express the universal experience of daydreaming to the viewer.
