LIFE AT THE TRAILER PARK I | 2023
Suzanne Valkenburg (Netherlands, 1981) graduated with an MFA in Photography from St. Joost School of Arts in Breda (NL) and is a documentary photographer.
With a background as a visual artist, she reveals unseen worlds through her long-term projects and photo series. Rather than producing flat, overly stylised images, she creates striking, authentic visuals. Both independently and on commission, she shares her work with those seeking raw and honest imagery.
Her most recent project, Van 't kamp (Life at the Trailer Park), seamlessly continues the thematic thread of her previous works and serves as a sequel to Als een vogel zo vrij (As Free as a Bird), which was also self-published as a book and exhibited in the Netherlands and internationally.
She has been actively involved in this community for five years, forming deep connections with the families who call these trailer parks home. This proximity allows her to capture their world from within. Her photography serves as a powerful tool for sparking meaningful social dialogues and preserving a visual record of our time.

LIFE AT THE TRAILER PARK II | 2020
“How many people have ever crossed the threshold of a trailer? Who truly knows how its residents live? Probably very few. Yet, there are countless assumptions about the morality and culture of those who call a trailer park home. Historically, and still today, people who travel or have no fixed place to live have been associated with poverty, begging, and crime.
With my project Life at the Trailer Park, I aim to pay tribute to the often-misunderstood and disappearing culture of trailer park residents. This is a culture defined by close family ties and unique traditions that bring comfort and a strong sense of community. I seek to offer insight into both the simplicity and freedom that come with life in a trailer park, as well as the outward image presented to the world.”
“I strive to create a platform where the wider public—including both citizens and trailer park residents—can come together and build stronger connections through stories, images, and text. Through this initiative, I hope to challenge the dominant one-sided narrative, which, even today, often leads to the social exclusion of trailer park communities.”
