Ziqi (Tree) Xu (b.2000) is a visual artist currently living and working between China and the United Kingdom. He holds a BFA degree in Photography from the Communication University of Zhejiang and is pursuing an MA degree in Contemporary Photography; Practices and Philosophies at CentralSaint Martins, UAL. Previous studies and research in film, postcolonial theory and anthropology led him to the complexities of human identity, the possibility of being inhuman and the boundaries between different narrative spaces. Through photography, installations, performance and response to the philosophies, he aims to critique the quotidian apparatus and the technological development in the contemporary world and critically examines the intricate interactions between humanity, technology, and violence. He has broadly exhibited in venues such as the International Localized Image Festival and Free Range Photography Exhibition.

DIRTY LIGHT
“‘Triptych: violence study’ is a part from my work Shoot, Death & Smile. In the work, I created a ‘crime scene’ by combining the visual representation of a ‘ballistic’ scene investigation, which closes the gap between the childhood shooting and the death of a violent figure, in order to reveal the repression of violence in human’s life.”
“I have been trying to use art practice as a way to critique the quotidian apparatus to unveil the violence and threat in technological development. I see art practice as a way of being ‘inhuman’, which would open a broader way of living.”
NATURAL BODY
“My recent practice working in progress is called ‘Swinging Condition’(2023-), which takes the underground tube as a metaphor of the world. Through the same swinging rhythm, I aim to show the singularity of human beings. And this installation will become a part of my art practice series ‘B-HUMAN’ about the inhuman future.”
