This work is informed by a body of work created during lockdown. Julia found the constant grey skies and terrible weather really impacted her spirits. In her research she encountered an amazing group of quilters from a geographically isolated community in rural Alabama. Whilst Julia was not geographically isolated, she felt isolated from friends and family and these quilters, and their work really struck a chord with her. Inspired by the abstract masterpieces created by these women and feeling a connection with their isolation, Julia worked on a body of geometric works, creating the line drawings with her sewing machine and using large quantities of bright colours to lift her spirits. The colours were informed by places, towns, countries, cities, sunsets and people that she was unable to travel to or see.
