ANNA ZEIBIG & JOANA PIRES: CELEBRATING SELF-EXPRESSION & EXPERIMENTATION IN CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY DESIGN
Anna Zeibig, a former interior designer from Budapest, has embarked on a captivating journey in the world of contemporary jewellery design. After studying at four jewellery schools from 2016, her diploma graduation work was awarded the Art Jewellery Night of Budapest Founders Prize in 2019. Her work has been exhibited in several international cities, including Budapest, Milan, Torino, Athens, Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre, Shanghai, and London.
Anna's Journey Collection celebrates the interconnectedness of the universe and the human experience. She sees jewellery not as a set of trends or evolving discipline but as a natural culmination of raw materials, self-expression, and the creative process dispersed in both space and time. This perspective on jewellery uplifts the human experience and embraces the ever-changing nature of our existence.
During the Cluster exhibition and on the Cluster online store, Anna highlights one of her statement rings as a perfect representation of her work. “It has an intuitionally created wavy shape that lays on your hands in a very comfortable way. It’s also a statement ring expressing self-confidence,” says Anna.
Brazilian-born and London-based, Joana Pires, the creative force behind Pinah Jewellery, is a self-taught designer who uses mixed media to create her pieces. With a background in drama and cinema, Joana spent over 12 years as an actress and producer before founding Pinah and committing to the life of a full-time maker. Her work is experimental, raw, and playful, and with each piece, she seeks to explore the possibilities of what a piece of jewellery can be and the story it can tell.
Born from Joana's passion for jewellery, shapes, and forms, Pinah Jewellery is an extension of her curiosity to create wearable objects. Joana's background in theatre allows her to reimagine the world around her continuously, transforming her pieces into 'experiments to wear'. The creative process begins with an idea and a meaning, followed by experimentation to translate the concept into necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings. Using diverse materials such as silver, gold, iron, stainless steel, paper, cardboard, leather, resin, clay, and found objects, Joana's fluid, intuitive, and offbeat approach to making jewellery results in raw, playful, experimental, and wearable pieces that are uniquely Pinah.
One such piece is the Eggshell Necklace, which is part of the Resilience Collection and is available through the Cluster online store. This necklace is made from reinforced eggshells, handstitched together and crafted from real eggshells. It embodies the motto, "We all break from time to time; the secret relies on how we put the pieces back together." This piece and its collection encapsulate Joana's creative process: exploring the possibilities of what a piece of jewellery can be and the story it can tell.
Anna's shift from interior design to jewellery design occurred four years ago in Madrid, and she has been passionately pursuing her new career ever since. Her sensibilities for space, materials, and nature seamlessly transition from interior design to her jewellery work.
In her creations, Anna favours working with silver, her self-made Japanese wax, and porcelain. She enjoys the slow and relaxing process of working with these materials and finds endless opportunities to create unique textures with the Japanese wax she cooks herself.
Anna's inspiration primarily comes from nature and human behaviour. She observes the world around her and finds innovative ways to incorporate these influences into her jewellery designs.
Ultimately, Anna wants those who wear her jewellery to feel empowered and to believe that her creations help them become who they want to be. Her dedication to crafting stunning and meaningful jewellery pieces ensures that each wearer can embrace their individuality and confidently embark on their own personal journey.
Joana has been making jewellery since she was young, and continuing to create and experiment was a natural path for her. Her evolution as a designer is an ongoing journey, and she refuses to restrict herself to specific materials. For Joana, the creation of a piece always starts with an idea and a meaning, followed by experimenting with different materials to find the best way to bring her concept to life.
Inspiration is everywhere for Joana, whether it's a film, book, person, particular food, an overheard sentence, or travel. She believes that inspiration comes when one is open and aware of their surroundings. When someone wears Pinah jewellery, Joana wants them to feel empowered to continue the story.
Pinah Jewellery showcases the limitless possibilities of storytelling through wearable art. Joana Pires' unique background in drama and cinema, coupled with her passion for shapes, forms, and experimentation, allows her to create one-of-a-kind pieces that empower the wearer to be part of an unfolding narrative. Through her experimental, raw, and playful designs, Joana Pires invites us to explore the world of wearable art and the stories it can tell.
The work of both designers is available for purchase through the Cluster Online Jewellery Store.
