MATERIAL MEMORIES & ILLUMINATED IMAGINATIONS: THE CREATIVE JOURNEYS OF LAVINIA BO & SOL NOVA STUDIOS

Celebrating the artistic flair of two innovative jewellery designers, Lavinia Bo and Sol Nova Studio, we delve into their divergent paths, unified by a shared commitment to transform everyday experiences into tangible, wearable art. With Lavinia Bo's designs immortalising personal memories through the materiality of wax, and Sol Nova Studio's creations illuminating the interplay of light and architecture, both artists push the boundaries of jewellery design, turning it into an extension of the self, a bearer of stories, and a conduit for exploration.

Lavinia Bo: Capturing Memories and Emotions through Materiality in Jewellery Design Lavinia Bo, a creative mind from Somerset, has always been captivated by the power of imagination and memories. After moving to London in her late teens, she attended the University of the Arts London Foundation course at Central Saint Martins and continued with a BA in Jewellery Design. Her final collection, "Impressions in Time," marked the beginning of her journey using wax to record the marks and damage of time, each piece telling its unique story.

Lavinia discovered her passion for jewellery design during her foundation year at university. She found it exciting and inspirational, as it resonated with her interest in sculpting the body. Her evolution as a designer began with drawing, then moved to sculpture and material manipulation, resulting in unique and tactile jewellery pieces.

Wax is Lavinia's favourite material, as it is versatile and allows both the designer and the wearer to impact the piece. It can also be preserved through lost wax casting, transforming from a responsive form to a durable metal. Lavinia finds inspiration in movement, interaction, and materiality, with the belief that the value of an object is best understood through touch.

When someone wears Lavinia Bo's jewellery, she wants them to feel happy nostalgia, as each piece serves as a reminder of the moment it was first worn. The unique surface texture allows the wearer to relive a moment of happiness that might otherwise have been forgotten.

The "Highlight" eyewear, featured at the Cluster show, exemplifies Polina's "Ray Directed to the Future" Collection. Made of aluminum sheet, the piece is both elegant and incomplete without the wearer and light. Drawing inspiration from Le Corbusier's work and the Rayonism movement, Polina aims to bridge the gap between artist and audience by bringing the designer's experience directly to the public.

Polina's passion for creating meaningful and wearable 3D objects led her to pursue a degree in jewellery design at the London College of Fashion. Over time, she recognised the importance of considering the interaction between a jewellery piece and the body, which guided her design philosophy.

Her graduation project, "Ray Directed to the Future," showcases the interplay between light and space, with the wearer playing an integral role in unlocking the piece's full potential. Polina's design approach now focuses on creating pieces that interact with the wearer, offering a unique and personal experience.

Silver is Polina's material of choice, thanks to its versatility and reflective qualities. However, she also enjoys experimenting with plastics and other innovative materials, which allow her to push the boundaries of her designs.

Contemporary architecture and urban environments provide Polina with endless inspiration, as she strives to incorporate elements of cityscapes, textures, and patterns into her work. When someone wears a piece from Sol Nova Studio, Polina hopes they experience a sense of wonder and a connection to something greater. Ultimately, her jewellery is a journey without a destination, inviting the wearer to explore the hidden beauty of light and space.

Impressions in Time by Lavinia Bo

The main inspiration for Lavinia Bo's jewellery is materiality. She believes that an object's meaning and value is best understood through touch. This idea led to her keepsake collection, where each touch leaves a permanent mark on the ring's surface, recording otherwise fleeting moments. The tactile surface of the keepsake ring holds value beyond the precious metal, as a physical link to a moment gone.

At the Cluster show, Lavinia showcased the "7-day necklace" from her 'Impressions in Time' collection. This commemorative jewellery piece captures and preserves significant periods in one's life. Inspired by the creases in clothes, the necklace records the wearer's experiences in real time, with its shape and positioning forming a "7" to reflect the number of days it was worn. Initially made from steel and wax, it picked up knocks and damage as it was worn, later preserved through lost wax casting with gold-plated metal to symbolise the preciousness of the captured memory.

Polina Voynova, the creative force behind Sol Nova Studio, is a young jewellery designer and a University of the Arts London (UAL) London College of Fashion (LCF) graduate. Having spent her formative years in some of the world's largest capitals, Polina developed a keen eye for urban environments and contemporary architecture. She uses these inspirations to create unique, wearable pieces that only reveal their individuality when worn.

In her designs, Polina explores the interplay of light and shadow, much like an architect uses natural light to shape spaces. Her minimalist designs and choice of pure materials are intentional, allowing the wearer to focus on the experience and the sophisticated beauty of dynamic light. This concept is inspired by architectural masterpieces such as Le Corbusier's Church of Saint-Pierre in Firminy, France, and Daniel Libeskind's Jewish Museum in Berlin, Germany.
