CLUSTER PHOTOGRAPHY & PRINT JOURNAL

DECEMBER 2024

In this conversation with Cluster, Canadian photographer Kate Young reflects on her journey from darkroom beginner to analogue expert. Blending silver gelatin, lumen, and cyanotype with botanical toning, her ethereal yet grounded work offers solace and connection. Young shares insights into her evolving techniques, her series Repose, and her recent exhibition at Toronto’s CONTACT Photography Festival.

Venezuelan-born, Netherlands-based photographer Jensy Franco discusses her introspective creative journey with Cluster London. Exploring her dual cultural identity, Franco’s photography blends her Venezuelan roots with her Dutch surroundings, offering a powerful, transformative beauty. Through self-portraits and floral symbolism, her work reflects resilience, authenticity, and personal discovery.

In this exclusive Cluster interview, photographer Daniela White reflects on her journey as an artist in London’s ever-changing urban landscape.

Her work explores the interplay of architecture and human experience, transforming cityscapes through abstraction, colour, and her fine arts background into striking, thought-provoking visuals that invite us to reimagine our connection to the spaces we inhabit.

Interviewed by Cluster, photographer Kathy Harms shares how photography became her meditative practice, connecting her to nature and urban life. From serene studies of nature to the dramatic Elemental Beauty series, Harms now finds calm in Porto’s urban textures and contrasts, using her contemplative lens to inspire pause and reflection.

Italian artist Ilaria Merola talks to Cluster about her innovative fusion of AI and traditional art, especially in her project Neural Metamorphosis. Inspired by classical art, sci-fi, and the beauty of Rome, Merola uses AI to capture moments of natural harmony and feminine power, viewing it as an extension of human creativity, not a replacement.

In this Cluster interview, photographer Denise Fait explores a poetic dreamscape where memory, beauty, and the subconscious intertwine.

Inspired by Tarkovsky’s cinematic intensity and her storytelling roots, Fait’s latest project, The Time Sculptor’s Daughter, delves into the sea, textures, and the transformative power of light and shadow.

For Christine Mooijer, photography isn’t just a medium—it’s a means of reconciling the dreams and realities we navigate daily.

In this interview with Cluster, Mooijer reflects on her early influences in pop culture and a fascination with the American Dream, capturing both the allure and disillusionment of idealised visions of life.

For Cluster Photography & Print Exhibitor Al Lindsay, photography is more than a craft—it’s a lifelong exploration. Al’s work spans multiple genres, each influencing the other in surprising ways.

In this interview with Cluster, Al delves into the inspirations and environments shaping his unique vision.

Clément Thuault has mastered the art of turning fleeting moments into enduring mysteries.

In this interview with Cluster, Thuault reflects on his inspirations, his fascination with the unusual, and how his creative process opens up new ways of seeing, transforming even the familiar into the fantastical.

In a world of bleak narratives, Chanel Irvine uses her lens to highlight resilience, connection, and the beauty of communities driving social and environmental change.

In an interview with Cluster, photographer Chanel shares her approach to visual storytelling, which centres on solution-based journalism and highlighting humanity’s resilience and connection.

The close-knit relationship between identity politics and photography was born with the invention of the camera. The New Yorker, Michelle Peralta, entertains the notion of dichotomies and split-second happenings in day-to-day living, particularly with the themes: dynamic versus inert, love versus loss and presence versus absence. One enigmatic composer of visual art from Cluster’s past exhibitions is the Italian Francesca Rossi, who lives and works in Milan. Rossi’s practice weaves through notions of familiarity and the discernment of her own comfort zone, of which she notes, ‘Through the photographic survey of my body and the physical context in which I move I express myself with a particular attention at the details. Through their details the objects show themselves in a new way and they change their sense.’

The painterly, wistful eye of Saul Leiter was largely unheard of by the wrong-headed art community in 1950s New York.
